Discovering the Sensory Heritage of Route 66

Led by Sofia Collette Ehrich, The Olfactory Contractor

  • Date: 11/14/2026 2:00 PM - 3:00 PM

Take a sensory journey down America's Main Street with the founder of The Olfactory Contractor, Sofia Collette Ehrich, and discover how the often-underappreciated sense of smell can transport us back in time by evoking deeply rooted memories.

From roadside diners and gas stations to desert landscapes and more, discover how Sofia helped to bring the history of Route 66 to life through the scents that shaped the experience of traveling the iconic highway for the Hi-Desert Nature Museum’s exhibition The Journey is the Destination: 100 Years of Route 66.

This presentation is free and open to all ages.  Registration is not required.

About The Olfactory Contractor: Sofia Collette Ehrich is an olfactory museologist, researcher, educator, and public speaker, and the founder of The Olfactory Contractor, which helps museums and cultural institutions use smell as a deliberate tool of interpretation. Working across the United States and Europe at the intersection of academia, museums, and industry, she translates research into exhibitions, educational programs, and public engagement, developing the vision for how scent can interpret a subject and collaborating with perfumers to realize the scents. She previously served as olfactory events manager for Odeuropa, the European research project dedicated to uncovering and preserving Europe's olfactory heritage.
